Compiler of Hearts-chapter 1 1

I'm sprinting through the darkness, my heart racing like a jackrabbit. The hand on my shoulder is gone, but the voice still echoes in my mind. "Run." I don't need to be told twice. I pump my arms, my legs burning as I dash through the blackness. I stumble, my hands flailing out to break my fall. The floor is cold, hard concrete. I scramble to my feet, my eyes straining to see something, anything. But there's nothing. Just darkness. And the sound of footsteps behind me. Heavy, pounding footsteps. They're gaining on me. I force myself to move faster, my breath coming in ragged gasps. I'm not sure where I'm going, but I know I need to get away. From Alex, from the arena, from the sick game that's being played out. I think back to the coding competition, the thrill of the challenge, the rush of adrenaline as I worked to solve the problems. But this is different. This is life or death. I round a corner, my eyes starting to adjust to the darkness. I see a sliver of light up ahead, a crack in the wall that suggests a door or a window. I make a beeline for it, my heart leaping with hope. I burst through the door, slamming it shut behind me. I lean against it, panting, my ears straining to hear if I've managed to escape. The footsteps have stopped. I've lost them. For now. I look around, taking in my surroundings. I'm in a narrow corridor, the walls lined with pipes and ductwork. The air is musty, filled with the scent of decay. I start to move forward, my eyes scanning the corridor for any sign of danger. And then I see it. A door at the end of the hall, with a sign that makes my blood run cold. "Server Room". I feel a shiver run down my spine as I remember the message on the paper. "Meet me in the server room. Come alone." I'm not alone. I'm being herded towards this place. But why? I take a deep breath, my heart pounding in my chest. I have to know what's going on. I push open the door, steeling myself for what's on the other side. And that's when I see her. Emily. My secret crush. The girl I've been pining for since the start of college. She's standing in front of a bank of servers, her eyes locked on mine. And she's not alone. There's someone else with her, someone who makes my blood run cold. Professor Lee. The head of the computer science department. And he's holding a gun. "Welcome to the server room," he says, his voice dripping with malice. "You're just in time to join the game." And then, just as I'm about to react, Emily speaks up. "I'm sorry," she says, her voice trembling. "I didn't mean to betray you." My mind reels as I try to process what's happening. Betrayal? What is she talking about? And then, just as I'm about to ask, the lights flicker and the room is plunged into darkness. I hear the sound of footsteps, heavy and deliberate. They're coming from the shadows. And then, a voice whispers in my ear. "You'll never escape the truth." Suddenly, the lights flicker back to life, and I see Emily's face, contorted in a mixture of fear and guilt. And then, everything goes black. But this time, I'm not alone. I feel a hand on my chest, a hand that's not Emily's. It's a hand that's cold, calculated, and deadly. And as I try to push it away, I hear a voice, a voice that makes my blood run ice cold. "You should have stayed out of the competition."
